Our CRNs have been busy continuing to foster safer, more connected communities across the province! Some of the activities featured this month include an intergenerational swimming event, specialized training for healthcare professionals on inclusive, person-centered care and a workshop for seniors on the important topic of Advanced Care Planning. Literacy initiatives helped provide diverse, inclusive books to local schools and community meals helped promote opportunities for building social connections among vulnerable adults.
Creating Safe and Inclusive Care: Training for BC Healthcare Professionals
The JQT Seniors Initiative CRN hosted a successful online training workshop for BC healthcare professionals from diverse sectors such as hospice, family services, healthcare, universities and community organizations. The attendees, including social workers, caregivers and other healthcare professionals, learned about the intersecting challenges Jewish queer and trans seniors face in life and discussed ways to create safety for older adults using a person-centered approach to healthcare.
Community Workshop Brings Seniors Together for Vital Conversations
The Robson Valley CRN hosted a recent community event that brought together over 60 attendees from McBride, Dunster and Valemount for an engaging and informative session on Advanced Care Planning. The workshop was led by a registered nurse, a community paramedic and a former notary, and was followed by Q&A, keeping participants – primarily seniors – actively involved. Attendees received My Voice booklets to help guide their planning and expressed interest in follow-up workshops for further support. A delicious Greek-themed lunch was offered and many stayed long after the session to socialize and make new friends.
Intergenerational Family Swim Makes a Splash!
The Sparwood CRN recently hosted its third Intergenerational Family Swim, continuing a beloved tradition that brings families together in a fun and meaningful way. As many older adults joined their families for a free swim, the event fostered social connections while providing valuable resources on adult abuse, neglect and self-neglect. After their swim, participants visited the CRN table to browse information pamphlets, grab some swag and enter a draw for a gift basket. Each guest also received a voucher for a free snack at Putter’s Grill, adding to the community spirit and enthusiastic gratitude from the event attendees.
Frosty’s Free Fun Day Brings Winter Cheer to the Shuswap
The Shuswap CRN, in partnership with the Sorrento Retreat and Conference Centre, hosted its first-ever Frosty’s Free Fun Day over the Family Day weekend – and it was a hit! Many grandparents joined their grandchildren for a day filled with winter fun, community connection and plenty of treats. Attendees enjoyed hot chocolate by the fire, snapped fun photos at the Frosty-themed booth, and took part in face painting, a scavenger hunt and a complimentary lunch with homemade soup and pretzel buns.
Although the snow didn’t stick around for snowman-building, the spirit of the day was bright and warm. With overwhelming positive feedback, organizers are already planning an even bigger and better Frosty’s Free Fun Day next year – so mark your calendars!
Diners Club Brings Seniors Together for a Heartwarming Valentine’s Dinner
The Sea to Sky CRN brought 39 older adults together during February’s Valentine-themed Diners Club for a night full of good food and great company! The menu included lasagna dinner with salad, garlic bread and dessert, and proved to be a successful opportunity for individuals to enjoy a delicious meal while being able to socialize with one another. Many seniors experience loneliness – especially during the holidays and other annual celebrations – and events such as community dinners help promote mental wellness and reduce isolation.
Spreading the Joy of Reading in Kaslo
The Kaslo CRN has been busy spreading the joy of reading by fulfilling special requests from the school library, ensuring students have access to books that inspire, educate and reflect the diverse world we live in. From stories about inclusivity, diversity and equity to books tackling racism, ageism, the importance of normalizing LGBTQ+ families and respecting people of all religious backgrounds, the team in Kaslo is helping to build a more age-friendly and compassionate community—one book at a time.
Ladies’ Luncheon: Growing Connections & Community
The past three months have been filled with laughter, friendship and fantastic experiences at the South Okanagan CRN’s Ladies’ Luncheon program! This beloved gathering continues to bring senior women in the community together, creating a welcoming space to connect and enjoy new experiences. January’s luncheon kicked off the year with a cozy in-office luncheon, complete with a participant-chosen movie—perfect for a relaxing and fun afternoon. February’s luncheon turned up the energy with dining at a local restaurant which included live music from a talented high school musician. March brought fresh faces as the South Okanagan team welcomed new participants with a lively meet-and-greet, using icebreaker games to spark new friendships.
Community, Conversation & Awareness: A Successful CRN Event in Creston
The Creston CRN recently hosted an outreach event at the local recreation complex, bringing community members together to learn, connect and raise awareness about adult abuse prevention. With clear signage and strong promotion, the event saw a fantastic turnout! Attendees enjoyed sandwiches and snacks while engaging in meaningful conversations about building a safer, more informed community. It was a great opportunity to strengthen connections and ensure vital resources remain accessible to those who need them—plus, participants got to take home some important BC CRN resources & materials for future reference.
