Of the estimated 550, 000 65+ patients diagnosed with dementia in Canada (Source: Alzheimer’s Society), almost a quarter will also be diagnosed with depression (Source: Here to Help).
Social isolation, grief, adjusting to changing life circumstances, and physical health problems are all factors that can lead seniors and older adults developing mental illness (Source: Government of BC). Mental illness leads to self-neglect in many people.
Mental health care and prevention may range from screening and early diagnosis, to maintaining balanced nutrition, exercising, and consistent cognitive and social engagement.
