Michael Volker, Executive Director of the 411 Seniors Centre Society in Vancouver, joined the BC CRN Board of Directors in January, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge in non-profit operations, fiscal management, projects management, sales, marketing, and fund development.
The 411 Seniors Centre is a bright and busy place. Michael stops to greet and introduce staff members, volunteers, and program participants alike. “At 411, 90 percent of the output is done by volunteers,” explains Michael. “All of the programs, cooking, tax clinics, and more are all run by volunteers.” This is just one of the reasons the Centre has become a second home for many older adults in the area.
Information and Referral Services are at the heart of 411 where it supports over 1,000 seniors annually. The Income Tax Clinic will also help more than 2,000 seniors file their tax returns over the course of a year. “These services are so important for helping seniors stay healthy and engaged in the community,” adds Michael.
The history of the 411 Seniors Centre goes back to 1977 when it opened its doors at 411 Dunsmuir Street in Vancouver. It quickly became an inclusive, versatile, and dynamic hub of activity for older adults in the downtown core. In 2012 the Seniors Centre relocated to Terminal Avenue for a “temporary” ten years before moving into its current home, a brand new, purpose-built building at 3502 Fraser Street.
“Without a doubt, the biggest part of my job is finding funding to sustain our programs,” explains Michael. Right now, the kitchen serves lunch two days a week. With support from the United Way of BC they also run the Social Meals program. Local grocery stores donate hundreds of pounds of food a year, which helps keep the cost of a hot meal low.
Michael sees an opportunity to grow information and referral programs across the province, employing what’s been learned at 411. In part, this is what drew him to the Board role with BC CRN. “Collaboration is key,” he says. “By strengthening partnerships, we can ensure that seniors across the province have access to the support they need to live independently and with dignity.” With his extensive background in non-profit leadership and his passion for community service, Michael is committed to making a lasting impact—both at the 411 Seniors Centre and beyond.
