The Isolation Pandemic: COVID-19 and the Social Determinants of Health

The program so far includes:
- Two panel discussions that focus on:
- Learning about and sharing what is known about the pandemic and its effects.
- Learning more about the longer-term effects of prolonged isolation and strategies for reducing the isolation of vulnerable populations
- A presentation from the City of Vancouver on their report on how vulnerable populations have been affected by COVID-19.
- A presentation from SFU Gerontology to share the results of a national study they participated in on the effects of the pandemic on social determinants of health.
- A presentation from the City of Surrey focusing on the relationships that have been built between the municipality and local community organization to combat the virus and isolation.
- Opportunities to share your unique learnings with other like organizations and teams.
- Opportunities to network.
“Everyone was broadsided by the pandemic,” says CRN Coordinator and Manager of Community Programs at Alexandra Neighbourhood House (the CRN’s host agency) Neil Fernyhough. “The genius of the CRN approach itself is a forum for collaboration where organizations can work together to devise best practices, strategize, and learn from one another. This event is a larger version of this. It’s time for senior-serving, vulnerable adult-serving organizations to coordinate a response to increasing isolation, which may evolve and grow beyond the COVID-19 vaccination period.”
“We’ve all learned a lot about the here and now, but we need to start planning for the future,” says Sadie Livingstone, Diversity and Inclusion Facilitator at Alexandra Neighbourhood House. “Right now, there is no end in sight to minimize or stop physical distancing. What has worked? How are we reaching isolated people? How are we connecting people who are less tech-savvy? How are people accessing resources? We want to explore all the research and what we can do together as a collective rather than as sole organizations and CRNs.”
“We want to hear from people who have been challenged with connecting with vulnerable populations,” adds Neil.
