The Chinese Community Response Network (CCRN) is dedicated to adult abuse prevention and awareness, providing education, resources, and support to vulnerable adults in the Chinese community. One shining example of this work is the Knitting Hearts Project, run by the Chinese Community Policing Centre for over four years.
This initiative goes beyond traditional programming, offering seniors a culturally inclusive, intergenerational platform to volunteer, mentor, and engage with youth and peers. Through knitting workshops, seniors create scarves, yarns, teddy bears, and comfort pouches, which are distributed to vulnerable members of the community.
But the benefits extend far beyond the tangible items. The project fosters social connection, cognitive and emotional well-being, and community cohesion, reflecting a holistic approach to senior wellness. Participants build skills, share knowledge with younger generations, and remain active, valued, and supported members of their communities.
By creating safe and supportive opportunities for seniors to engage and contribute, the Knitting Hearts Project not only promotes healthy aging but also strengthens protective factors that help reduce the risk of adult abuse and neglect. Social engagement, skill-building, and intergenerational connection all play a role in empowering seniors and reinforcing their sense of belonging.
The CCRN continues to champion projects like Knitting Hearts as part of its mission to raise awareness, provide education, and foster safe, inclusive communities for all adults.
