BC’s Community Response Networks prepare for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15

purple irisesLast year, the Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Katzie, Community Response Network planted and shared over 300 purple iris bulbs with the community. Today, they are blooming in several community gardens and ushering in WEAAD 2025! The project is a partnership between the CRN, CEED Centre Society, Alouette Men’s Shed and Maple Ridge Garden Club.

Community Response Networks across the province are gearing up to mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) with a wide variety of events and celebrations including teas, resource fairs, flag raisings and much more!

WEAAD unites communities globally each June 15th to promote older adults’ right to live with dignity and security.

This year, our theme “Be Bold – Age with Attitude” celebrates the strength, wisdom, and resilience of older adults while promoting their right to live free from abuse and discrimination.

This approach combines celebration with education, creating communities where aging is honored and elder abuse is prevented through awareness, understanding, and action.”

Over the past month, the BC CRN Admin. Team hosted three WEAAD Orientation sessions for CRNs and got to hear firsthand some of their plans. A video of the information has been compiled and is available here.

BC CRN encourages everyone to participate in WEAAD by:

  • Wearing Purple
  • Visiting a senior
  • Doing a small act of kindness for an older adult in your community
  • Asking your local Mayor and Council to Proclaim June 15 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
  • Attending the National WEAAD Virtual Webinar on Wednesday, June 11
