Four Inspiring Leaders Honoured with the King Charles III Coronation Medal

BC CRN is proud to celebrate four remarkable individuals whose tireless efforts to support and empower older and vulnerable adults have been recognized with the prestigious King Charles III Coronation Medal. This national honour celebrates Canadians who have made significant contributions to their communities, and these recipients exemplify that spirit of service and dedication.

 

Dr. Gloria Gutman – Visionary Leader in Gerontology

Dr. Gloria Gutman, BC CRN Board Member and founder of Simon Fraser University’s Gerontology Research Centre and Department, is a nationally recognized trailblazer in aging research and advocacy. She is the author or editor of 23 books, including Elder Abuse in the LGBTQ2SA+ Community, and a lifelong advocate for aging with dignity and equity. Her previous honours include the Order of Canada and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Dr. Gutman continues to be a guiding light in the fight against elder abuse and ageism.

Rosaline Glynn – North Island Advocate for Seniors

Rosaline Glynn, coordinator of the Mount Waddington Community Response Network (CRN), has dedicated over 40 years to championing seniors’ wellbeing across the North Island. From launching a food delivery program during the pandemic to serving on numerous advisory boards, Rosaline has continually fought against social isolation and advocated for better care for older adults. Her unwavering commitment has created real change, making her community safer, more connected and more inclusive.

Horst Backé – Champion for LGBTQ+ Seniors and Refugees

Horst Backé, coordinator of the Vancouver Island LOVE Community Response Network (CRN), brings decades of experience as a retired nurse, healthcare leader and AIDS activist to his work supporting LGBTQ+ refugees. As a founder of ROAR (Reaching Out Assisting Refugees), Horst helps resettle individuals fleeing persecution, providing wrap-around supports that promote safety, dignity and belonging. His commitment to inclusive, compassionate care has transformed lives and strengthened communities.

 

Sandi McCreight – Innovator in Senior Engagement

Sandi McCreight, coordinator of the Castlegar Community Response Network (CRN) and founder of IRIS (Increasing Recreation Involving Seniors), has been a dedicated advocate for older adults since 2006. Through IRIS and other local initiatives, she promotes recreation, education, nutrition and intergenerational connections. Sandi is also a member of the Office of the Seniors Advocate’s Council of Advisors and works tirelessly to prevent elder abuse and ageism while fostering meaningful inclusion of seniors in community life.
