Together, We Light Up BC in Purple for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

On June 15, communities across the province will once again come together to recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) by lighting up landmarks, flying flags, hosting community events, and painting British Columbia in purple to raise awareness about the importance of preventing adult abuse, neglect, and self neglect.

Each purple light represents more than awareness. It represents conversation, connection, dignity, and a shared commitment to building safer communities for older adults and vulnerable adults across British Columbia.

Through the leadership of over 90 Community Response Networks (CRNs), municipalities, organizations, businesses, and community members are transforming public spaces into visible symbols of solidarity and action. From city halls and bridges to community centres and local gathering places, purple illuminations are helping paint the province in purple while sending a powerful message that adult abuse and neglect cannot remain hidden in our communities.

At BC CRN, we believe awareness is an important step toward change. WEAAD creates opportunities for people to learn, connect, and strengthen local responses through collaboration and relationship building. It also highlights the collective impact that communities can have when individuals, organizations, and local leaders work together toward a common goal.

Across British Columbia, CRNs are planning creative and meaningful initiatives to recognize the day. Some communities are organizing flag raisings and proclamations. Others are coordinating purple light displays, educational events, community walks, information booths, and awareness campaigns that help spark conversations about respect, inclusion, and safety for older adults.

This growing movement reflects the strength of communities taking action together. Every purple light, every shared resource, and every conversation helps reduce isolation, increase awareness, and encourage people to recognize and respond to adult abuse and neglect.

As we mark the 20th year of WEAAD, we invite communities across the province to join us in lighting up British Columbia in purple.

Together, we can continue building communities where older adults are valued, respected, included, and safe.
