SPCRN Coordinator Anna Hudson set the tone as MC, creating a festive atmosphere with red-and-white balloons, bright napkins, and cheerful table centerpieces. Each place setting included a handout highlighting the year’s International Day of Older Persons theme and the importance of celebrating seniors, along with BC CRN rack cards and swag to raise awareness about adult abuse, neglect, and self-neglect. Anna also shared stats on seniors’ contributions to Canada, and spoke directly about ageism and the ways it can increase vulnerability to exploitation and harm.

The lunch menu (hot dogs, potato salad, chips, drinks, and ice cream bars) was a hit, keeping spirits high while participants mingled and learned. The talented musicians, seniors themselves, entertained with humor and insight, demonstrating that aging can be fun, inspiring, and meaningful. SPCRN also highlighted food security by giving away Thrifty Food Gift Certificates and a coffee card, ensuring participants felt valued in every way.
Throughout the event, the visual displays and handouts created a strong presence, allowing attendees to engage with SPCRN and BC CRN resources, ask questions, and reflect on the importance of protecting vulnerable adults. Many participants noted their familiarity with past SPCRN events, showing the ongoing impact of these community initiatives.
The event was more than a celebration; it was a powerful reminder that honouring seniors goes hand-in-hand with education, awareness, and action. By blending festivity with advocacy, SPCRN strengthened connections across the Saanich Peninsula and reinforced the message that every senior deserves safety, respect, and a community that cares.
