The area is home to Gitxsan people (Gitanmaax, Glen Vowell and Kispiox) and there is also a nearby Wetʼsuwetʼen community. Historically, Hazelton has been a trading centre for the Hudson Bay Company, a main supply point during the gold rush, and welcomed the first ever steamboat on its shores.
