Sharon Strom recently moved back to the Elk Valley where she lived from October 1992 through June 2022. She returned to her ‘original’ home community in Northern Manitoba after retiring from Teck Coal Ltd. Retirement did not last long as Sharon found herself in need of more mental stimulation, so when asked to teach for a year to offset a teaching shortage, she accepted the challenge and had the opportunity to facilitate learning for a beautiful group of Grades 2 and 3 students. Upon completing that role and attempting retirement again, it became clear to Sharon that she was not yet ready for retirement. An opportunity to return to the Elk Valley, which she quickly realized was her ‘real’ home, came when she was given the opportunity to become the Building Manager for the recently opened Elkford Senior Housing complex.

Sharon was a member of the Sparwood CRN from its onset until she left the area in 2022. She found the experiences working with the coordinator and the other members enjoyable and fulfilling. Sharon is eager to engage with all the CRNs in the East Kootenays to contribute to the improvement of the lives of seniors and other vulnerable adults.
