Revelstoke Community Response Network

As part of the BC Community Response Networks, the Revelstoke Community Response Network is a network of organizations, both governmental and non-profit, that support seniors and other vulnerable adults in the Revelstoke area. Our members include the Revelstoke Women’s Shelter (our host agency), Community Connections (including Better at Home), Hospice, the Revelstoke Seniors’ Centre, Begbie Manor, Moberly Manor, Okanagan Regional Library, the Revelstoke Credit Union, Interior Health (administration, social work and home care), the community paramedic, the RCMP, RCMP Victim Services and the City of Revelstoke (Social Development, community centre).

The network meets every second month and as needed. Contact Laura or Imogen at 250-814-8971 or revycrn@gmail.com for more information.

The Revelstoke CRN is located on the homeland of the Sinixt, in an area that was also known and stewarded by the Secwépemc, Syilx and Ktunaxa.

Our Work in Revelstoke:

Workshops:

The Revelstoke CRN organizes and/or delivers workshops on adult abuse and neglect for the general public and frontline organizations. We sometimes partner on these workshops with member organizations, including the Revelstoke Credit Union and Better at Home.

Newsletter:

The Revelstoke CRN produces a monthly newsletter, Revelstoke Senior Life, which is distributed to around 200 residents on our e-mail list. We also print 50 extra copies that we distribute in places frequented by seniors to reach those without internet access. The goal of the newsletter is to inform seniors about subjects of local interest, keep them connected by producing an event and activity calendar, and highlighting resources available to them. We know the newsletter reaches well over the 250 seniors who receive the e-mails or paper copies as seniors frequently share it and the two main articles of each issue are reprinted in our local newspaper, the Revelstoke Review, each month. The newsletter is also funded by Columbia Basin Trust and the Revelstoke Credit Union. In the words of one senior in her 90s, “It is very important to read the newsletter for seniors. I let other seniors know about the newsletter and events. I pass the newsletter on to other seniors. With that information, I encourage seniors to come out. Don’t stay at home.”

Emergency Preparedness:

As a network of frontline workers, the Revelstoke CRN is well positioned to support seniors and other vulnerable adults to prepare for emergencies, including heat waves, wildfire smoke and possible evacuation, power outages and extreme cold. In response to heat waves, we have purchased fans for loan and have installed insulating foil for windows. We worked with Better at Home and Community Futures to raise awareness of household and organizational preparedness in emergencies. We also work with some City staff to support planning and communication. Workshops and the monthly seniors’ newsletter have been effective ways of getting information on emergency preparedness to seniors.
