Provincial Learning Event: Understanding Abuse of Men Across the Lifespan, Including Older Adult Men

Abuse of men remains one of the least discussed forms of interpersonal violence. Social expectations about masculinity, fear of stigma, and limited awareness of available supports can make it difficult for men to recognize abuse, seek help, or disclose their experiences.

In this webinar, Dr. Jennifer Marchbank, Professor and Chair of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies at Simon Fraser University, will explore the realities of abuse experienced by men, with a particular focus on older adult men. Drawing on her extensive research on interpersonal violence, elder abuse, and vulnerable populations, Dr. Marchbank will discuss the forms abuse can take, the factors that increase vulnerability in later life, and the barriers that prevent many men from accessing support.

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how abuse affects older adults, learn to recognize warning signs, and explore evidence-informed approaches for prevention, intervention, and support. This session is relevant for service providers, healthcare professionals, community organizations, caregivers, advocates, and anyone interested in promoting safety, dignity, and well-being for older adults.
