On June 15, BC CRN joined colleagues across Canada and around the world to mark the landmark 20th anniversary of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).
In British Columbia communities came together to celebrate 20 years of collective action through purple light displays, flag raisings, proclamations, community walks, information booths, educational events, awareness campaigns, and more! Led by more than 90 Community Response Networks (CRNs) and supported by municipalities, organizations, businesses, volunteers, and community members, these initiatives transformed public spaces into visible symbols of solidarity and action.
Led by more than 90 Community Response Networks (CRNs) and supported by municipalities, organizations, businesses, volunteers, and community members, these initiatives transformed public spaces into visible symbols of solidarity and action.
The shining purple lights served as a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to prevent adult abuse, neglect, and self-neglect while promoting the dignity, rights, and inclusion of older adults. Through meaningful conversations, community engagement, and collaborative action, communities across the province helped break the silence surrounding adult abuse, challenge ageism, and strengthen local responses.
Thank you to all of our amazing CRN Coordinators, Regional Mentors, volunteers, community members, partner agencies, and funders for all of your efforts and dedication! Together, we’re demonstrating the power of collective action in building safer, more respectful and inclusive communities for everyone.
The photo album below showcases some of the meaningful actions taken by communities to mark this important day. If you have photos or stories to share, we’d love to see them. Please submit them using our Event Photos and Stories Form.
