Beware of “Recovery Pitch” Scams

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) recently flagged an incident where fraudsters impersonated the Canadian Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (CNPEA), claiming they could assist someone with an ongoing investigation to recover previously lost funds. The target recognized that this was likely a fraud and reported it. This is an example of fraud called the “Recovery Pitch”. Suspects may even use our logo and letterhead as part of the scheme.

Remember that:

CNPEA does not have a “fraud and security unit”, and does not do any victim outreach. CNPEA will never ask you to transfer funds or make a payment of any kind.

What to do:

If you are unsure, contact your local police or the CNPEA directly before proceeding.

You should also report to the CAFC, who does have a Senior Support Unit that can assist vulnerable people in cases of fraud.
