This World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) on June 15, 2022, we are inviting Canadians of all ages to become a champion of elder abuse prevention by pledging to stand up for the rights of older people.
Human rights don’t get old.
BC CRN is partnering with the Canadian Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (CNPEA), CanAge, and Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario (EAPO) on key actions you can take to prevent abuse in your community. By standing up to adult abuse, you are also standing up for the human rights of older people everywhere.
Here are some ways to get involved[1]:
- Join the movement to stop adult abuse and stand up for older people’s rights by adding your name to the national network at https://www.weaad.ca/ and signing up for the WEAAD newsletter.
- Work with your community to make adult abuse a top priority. Volunteering with your local Community Response Network (CRN) is a great start!
- Learn the signs of adult abuse and understand how to help someone you think is being abused. You can get started by signing up for one of BC CRN’s programs – It’s Not Right! or See Something, Say Something.
If you are an organizational leader, consider including agism in your equity, diversity, and inclusion practices.
If you are an elected official and/or policymaker, consider making your community age-friendly and investing in abuse prevention.
Check back for more BC CRN WEAAD news in future E-Connector editions and be sure to talk to your local CRN to get involved. Be sure to also follow us on Facebook and Twitter and post using the hashtag #WEAAD2022.
