Day of Older Persons

Seniors are valued members of society, convey a wealth of experience and wisdom in our community and deserve to live with dignity and respect. It is our collective responsibility to ensure they live safely and fully in a community that cares about them.

October 1st is the United Nations’ International Day of Older Persons. It is a chance to recognize the significant growth of this population segment, the contribution that older persons make to society, and to bring awareness to age-related issues. The theme for the 2019 International Day of Older Persons was ‘The Journey to Age Equality’.

The world’s population of people over 60 years old will double by 2050.  It is the fastest growing age group of any other group. Enhanced attention to the needs and challenges faced by many older people is required.

People usually celebrate the day by spending time with their grandparents, visiting seniors’ homes, sending greeting cards or just a smile.
