Salt Spring Island Community Response Network

Salt Spring Island in the Strait of Georgia is the largest and most widely visited of the Gulf Islands. An island 194+ sq. km in size, Salt Spring’s population of 10,500+ consists of 30% seniors 65 and over. Salt Spring Island is also in the traditional territory of the Salishan peoples. In the 1850s, the island became a safe haven for African-Americans fleeing discriminatory legislation passed in California. In the 1960s, the island again became a refuge, this time for American draft during the Vietnam War.
