Richmond is a coastal city and municipality member of Metro Vancouver. The city is made up of most of the islands in the Fraser River delta. Sixty percent of the 198,300 resident population are immigrants – the highest proportion of immigrants in Canada. After English, the most commonly spoken languages are Cantonese and Mandarin. Richmond is the fourth largest city after Vancouver, Surrey, and Burnaby. Historically, Coast Salish bands had temporary camps on the island, moved from year to year. The Terra Nova cannery had, at one time, been a Musqueam village.
